about

This song came out of a contest I had with a guitar student to both write songs for our next week's lesson. Hers was a great song exactly about where she was in her life at that point- end of high school- excitement, memories, etc. I asked what mine should be about and she said "how about my blue guitar?" (she had a blue nylon string guitar with a bunch of chipped paint). So I said "ok". Well, here it is. It took me a couple more years to get one problematic verse in the way I wanted it and to get around to recording.

lyrics

Experts say in the background rings
a single note played on unknown strings
left over from a cosmic chord struck long ago.

Others have a theorem that
if we all believe we can hear it strum as it
rolls and radiates across the spectrum.

I've always suspected as I look in the night
that the sky is a blue guitar in a single spotlight.

If a billion stars were in a web
stretched tighter as their distance spreads
their harmonies would ring throughout the cosmos.
I wish that I could stick around
long enough to hear that glorious sound
as it fades in, warm and vibrant, from the background.

So what if the stars are just chips of paint
scarring up the night?
And what if all we think we know
is not destined to be right?
And what if none of us will live to see
what's just beyond our sight?

The heart has regions unexplored
where resonates this unknown chord
in the background of our lives
and in unknowingness of sky.

We're all bound together looking deep in the night
at a blue guitar sky in a single spotlight.
