With the Birds Above Fort Funston is movement 1 from the trio of pieces: Inner Postcards from San Francisco. It was commissioned and performed by The Bernal Hill Players for their "In and About the City" CD and concert series featuring new compositions inspired by San Francisco and Mexico City.

This movement is inspired by watching hang gliders jump off of the cliffs at Fort Funston. They glide over Ocean Beach and swoop along with the gulls along the cliffs sometimes suspended so high, sometimes zooming along impossibly close.
